our heritage
where we began
Shaping Merchant Navy officers since 1986. Clyde Marine Training (CMT) grew from a small team to become the UK’s largest maritime training provider, supporting thousands of cadets into professional seafaring careers. CMT was founded to address an industry shortage of Merchant Navy officers. Early partnerships started with three companies and six cadets, setting the approach we still follow today.
how we grew
Over more than three decades, CMT has become the UK’s largest maritime training provider, managing over 800 cadets at any one time and overseeing a significant share of the UK officer cadet intake.
building the modern UK cadet pathway
CMT has played a pivotal role in shaping the UK maritime training landscape. Our team contributed to the development of the Government Assistance for Training (GAFT) and helped establish the framework that evolved into today’s SMarT funding model. We continue to work closely with industry bodies, training providers and employers to support the standards that guide maritime education and professional development across the UK.

independent in operation
built on maritime expertise
Clyde Marine Training operates as an independent training company, working with a wide range of sponsoring organisations and leading UK nautical colleges. While our role is focused on developing the next generation of seafarers, our connection to the wider Northern Marine Group gives us first-hand insight into the realities of modern ship management. It means we can combine independent guidance with practical industry knowledge, supporting cadets from interview through to graduation and beyond.
