If you are looking to kick start your career in the Merchant Navy then you have come to the right place. The maritime sector doesn’t just promise an exciting adventure, but a varied and rewarding career. There are various career paths and opportunities to choose from such as deck officer, engineering officer and electro-technical officer. Regardless of what route you decide to take a unique way of life packed with challenges and responsibilities is just around the corner. Here’s how to join the Merchant Navy:
Cadetship
The best way into the Merchant Navy is through an officer cadetship. You can join as an officer cadet from the age of 16 onwards as long as you meet the entry requirements. Our training programme is a blend of onboard practical learning with classroom based study fully equipping you with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience for a life at sea.
Gain hands-on experience and a recognised qualification
School leavers often struggle to get that foot on the career ladder because they lack experience but a Merchant Navy cadetship doesn’t have those barriers. We offer you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working towards an internationally recognised qualification from a top nautical college or university. As part of your training, you will also receive a Certificate of Competency (CoC) which you need to work at sea.
Earn while you learn
Unlike traditional higher education, you can earn as you learn. You will be placed with a suitable sponsoring company who will pay you up to £175 a week and during your sea phases, all food and accommodation is free. As well as paying you a bursary they will cover your tuition fees so you can enjoy your journey without the pressure of student debt.
Entry requirements
To apply for a cadetship the bare minimum requirement is at least four qualifications at GCSE/Standard Grade/National 5 level including maths, English and one science-based subject. As well as holding the relevant academic qualifications you must also have good eyesight and be physically fit as you will be required to pass a medical before you start training.
Application process
When you click apply you will be taken through to an application form which you can complete within minutes if you have all the relevant details to hand. Once you submit the form, your application will go through a thorough screening process to ensure your suitability for the training programme. If you get through to the next stage of the application process you will be invited along to an interview at one of our offices. We will also send you out an additional questionnaire which you will need to be completed prior to your interview.
