Sponsored Degree Training

The University of the Sea is an exciting concept that can provide you with a sponsored degree, which means you'll be paid to study. So you live like a regular student, only a lot more comfortably with your fees taken care of and an allowance for day-to-day expenses.

Where will it lead? [ Top]
The course puts you on the first rung of the ladder to a career in the British shipping industry, either on board ship or on dry land! At sea you would begin working as a deck (navigating) or engineer officer on modern vessels trading worldwide. With further study and hard work you could command your own ship or be chief engineer, anywhere in the world and also aim for a senior position ashore in ship management.

If ships are not for you, the Degree is particularly valuable for work involved with:

  • organisation, operation and commercial control of ships
  • port and harbour management and administration
  • vessel and cargo broking, vessel finance and trade management
  • technical management of ships

How do I apply? [ Top]
In the first instance you will need to apply for the course of your choice through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS – www.ucas.ac.uk ). Entry is subject to the admission requirements of the universities/colleges concerned and typically the minimum standard will include mathematics and/or physics at A/H level.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for Deck (Navigating) Officer Trainees following a BSc in Nautical Science / Nautical Studies / Merchant Ship Operations.

Medical fitness, including eyesight and colour perception tests, is required for trainee officers. If you are successful in securing sponsorship, you will have industrial placements at sea between academic years as well as during your four-year course.

Sponsorships [ Top]
All our degree schemes are fully sponsored with all Tuition and Course Fees paid by the sponsoring company. In addition students are given Subsistence Payments to cover their cost of living while at University.

Current Engineering Students [ Top]
We currently run a course where existing engineering students can obtain sponsorship for the last two years of their degree plus a period of training after the degree to complete seatime and short courses. You will ultimately obtain the Officer of the Watch qualification which will allow you to sail as an engineer officer on any vessel in the world. Details of the course can be obtained by contacting us.

Post Graduation [ Top]
We are able to offer a limited number of sponsorships to Engineering Graduates on a Conversion Course to Officer of the Watch. Details of the course can be obtained by contacting us.
