PHASE

COURSE STRUCTURE

 

 

Phase 1

College – STCW’95 Short Courses including Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid and Personal Survival Techniques. Induction and pre-sea safety training completed together with academic and other learning, to support work in the first sea phase.

Phase 2

Sea phase – Commence Work Based Learning projects of well defined tasks, reports and projects set by the college.  Emphasis of basic familiarisation tasks. 

Phase 3

College – Academic and other learning required to support work in the second sea phase.

Phase 4

Sea phase – Completion of Work Based Learning tasks reinforcing and developing theory studied in college.

Phase 5

College – Completion of learning outcomes for Foundation Degree/Professional Diploma. Undertake professional short courses and certification requirements, culminating in the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) Oral examination for First Certificate of Competency.

 

HNC/D – Deck Officer [ Top]

 

PHASE

COURSE STRUCTURE

 

 

Phase 1

College – STCW’95 Short Courses including Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities and Personal Survival Techniques. Introduction to HNC units, study skills, theoretical & practical aspects of Efficient Deck Hand, Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats certificates.

Phase 2

Sea phase – Commence Training Record Book by means of practical tasks and written reports. Shipboard introduction, familiarisation & development of basic seamanship and seafarer skills.

Phase 3

College – Consolidate learning from phase 2. Completion of units including Chartwork & Tides, Navigational Mathematics, Meteorology, Bridge watchkeeping plus others leading to HNC.

Phase 4

Sea phase – Continue work towards Level 3 of Training Portfolio by means of practical tasks and written reports.

Phase 5

College – MCA ancillary course undertaken. Undertake professional Short Courses including Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid, Proficiency in Survival Craft and certification requirements Course culminates with Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) Oral examination for First Certificate of Competency.

College – STCW’95 Short Courses including Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities and Personal Survival Techniques. Commence HNC Part 1, Study skills, introductory work relating to the shipping industry, marine engineering practice and MNTB workshop skills

Phase 2

Sea phase - Commence Work based learning projects of Training Record Book including tasks and reports.  Emphasis of basic familiarisation tasks. 

Phase 3

College - HNC Part 2 containing hands-on training and assessment to satisfy MNTB Skills specification. Additional theoretical work and MNTB workshop skills.

Phase 4

Sea phase - Completion of Training Record Book by means of practical tasks and written reports, emphasis moving from basic skills to engineering operations, duties and responsibilities.

Phase 5

College – Assessment of evidence produced during sea phase. Undertake professional Short Courses including Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid, Proficiency in Survival Craft and certification requirements. MNTB workshop skills completed, course culminating in Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) Oral examination for first Certificate of Competency.
