Maritime Educational Foundation

 

The Maritime Educational Foundation (MEF) is a shipping industry charitable organisation overseen by a board of Trustees who represent Nautilus International, the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union (RMT),several UK based shipping companies and the UK Chamber of Shipping.

The MEF strives to be a centre of excellence for seafarer training and provides support to the maritime sector for defined education and training purposes. We aim to provide ‘gold standard’ new entrant seafarer training programmes and further development opportunities for ratings and officers. We also provide funding support to specific activities and projects with identified outcomes that will facilitate and promote the education and training of seafarers in maritime skills.

Each Year the MEF aims to sponsor 40 officer trainees. These trainees will be recruited and managed by our chosen contracted training management companies, with their training directed by the MEF Officer Training Good Practice Guidelines. A range of development activities are being added to the MEF officer training programmes, aimed at producing ‘gold standard’ officers. In partnership with the Outward Bound Trust the MEF is currently running an induction course designed to facilitate the move from home and school to working at sea and a life at college.
